Baking - some simple rules

Do you have what it takes to get started with baking? While many people prefer to use a kitchen aid machine, or a bread maker, the old time mixing in a bowl works just as good as it ever did. A large mixing bowl or two is necessary, as are a few large wooden spoons and some empty glass jars and tins. Large coffee or pickle jars work great and also means you can recycle what you have rather than go out and buy.

Having somewhere to store flour will ensure it stays fresh longer than when it is left in the bag. Buying ingredients in bulk will also save you money, but again, it needs to be properly stored in order to stay fresh and useable. Glass jars are great for storing raisins and currants, chocolate chips, backing powder, baking soda, and, sugar.

Try to keep all of your baking supplies and ingredients in one place, that way, you will be able to see at a glance if you have what you need. There is nothing worse than embarking on a baking project only to discover you used the last of your ingredients the last time.

If you have not been too much of a baker in the past it's time to give it another go. It's not just the cost of buying baked goods that should encourage you; it's also the free berries ready for picking. And, if you have any space in your garden or on your patio, it's easy to plant dwarf fruit trees that will give you a bounty year after year.

Strawberries and rhubarb are great together and they are also easy to grow and don't take much room. Even if all you have is a patio, strawberries can grow from hanging baskets and rhubarb can grown in deep pots. And let's not forget winter baking, which can include meat and vegetable pies. Carrots can grow in deep pats and pea and beans can also be patio grown if you don't have a garden.

Growing your own food and turning it into cakes, pies, cookies and other sumptuous treats both saves you money and ensures you know exactly what you are eating - no preservatives or unknown ingredients!
